‖ mesembryanthemum Bot.|mɛˌsɛmbrɪˈænθɪməm| [mod.L., miswritten for *mesēmbrianthemum, ad. assumed Gr. type *µεσηµβριάνθεµον, f. µεσηµβρία noon + ἄνθεµον flower. The name, rendered in Eng. as Midday-flower and in Ger. as Mittagsblume, refers to the fact that several species open their flowers only for a short time at mid-day.] The typical genus of the family Mesembryaceæ; a plant of this genus, a fig-marigold.
