† mers Sc. Obs. Also 6 merse. [a. MDu. merse (mod.Du. mars) ‘top’ of a mast, literally ‘basket’.] A round-top surrounding the lower masthead. Also attrib. in mers clothes, streamers and hangings suspended from the ‘mers’.
