Medicean, a.|mɛdɪˈsiːən|
[f. mod. L. Medice-us (f. It. Medici, surname) + -an. Cf. F. médicéen.]
Pertaining to the family of the Medici, who ruled Florence during the 15th c., and to whom belonged Popes Leo X (1513–21) and Clement VII (1523–34). Used as the designation of the library at Florence (otherwise called Laurentian) founded by Lorenzo de' Medici, and of MSS. there preserved; also, of various works of ancient art contained in the Florentine collections founded by the Medici.
