matryoshka, n. (mætrɪˈɒʃkə, ‖ maˈtrjoʃkə) Also matreshka, matrioshka, etc. [a. Russ. matrëshka.] In Russia, (one of) a set of hollow and usu. decorated wooden doll figures of differing sizes, each one made so as to nest inside the next largest. Chiefly attrib. (in sing.) in matryoshka doll. Cf. Russian doll s.v. Russian a. 2 e. The Russian plural form matryoshki is unrecorded in English use.
