masseter Anat.|mæˈsiːtə(r)| [a. mod.L. massēter (whence F. masséter), a. Gr. µασητήρ (formerly miswritten µασσ-), agent-n. from µασᾶσθαι to chew. (The Gr. n. occurs in apposition with µῦς muscle.)] (Usually masseter muscle.) One of the principal masticatory muscles, passing from the malar bone and zygomatic arch to the ramus of the lower jaw.
