† ˈmaship Obs. Forms: 6 mas(s)hyp(pe, mas(s)hip(pe. [An abbreviation of mastership: cf. Mas n.1 Common in 16th c.] = mastership. Only with poss. pron., as his, your maship, etc. Apparently the abbreviated form (at least when used in writing) implied disrespect: cf. quot. 1567–9.
