margo, n. Bot.|ˈmɑːgəʊ| [a. L. margo (see margin n.), adopted in this sense in Ger. by A. Frey-Wyssling et al. 1956, in Planta XLVII. 119.] The network of cellulose strands surrounding the torus of the pit membrane in a bordered pit of a gymnosperm.
[1896Jrnl. R. Microscopical Soc. Oct. 551 Herr K. Starbäck proposes the following terminology for the various parts of the Discomycetes:—The entire outer layer is the pars parietis excipuli; the portion which surrounds the hymenium and the epithece is the margo excipuli and pars marginalis excipuli.] 1965K. Esau Plant Anat. (ed. 2) iii. 54 The microfibrillar structure of the margo of the bordered pits of conifers has been studied in considerable detail. 1974Wood Sci. & Technol. VIII. 252 This method of enzyme treatment indicates that the embedding substances of the margo in the differentiating pit membranes are composed of hemicelluloses. 1981J. R. Barnett Xylem Cell Devel. ii. 73 The microfibrils are certainly deposited after those of the margo since they obscure the latter where they pass through the torus. 1986Wilson & White Anat. Wood iv. 56 Once a pit has become aspirated it tends to remain in this condition; the margo adheres closely to the inside of the pit border—hydrogen bonding..is thought to be involved here. |
