Mandevilla, n. Bot.|mændəˈvɪlə| [mod.L., f. the name of Henry John Mandeville (1773–1861), British minister: see quot. 1840.] A tropical American genus of plants (mostly lianas) of the family Apocynaceae, some of which are grown as ornamentals in tropical and subtropical regions and including the Chilean jasmine; (also mandevilla) a plant of this genus; esp. the cultivar M. ×amabilis, with red flowers having a strong fragrance.

Minister in that place, to the Hon. W. F. Strangways, by whom seeds were presented to the Horticultural Society. It had been collected by Mr. Tweedy, and sent home under the name of the Chile Jasmine. [Note] I have much pleasure in naming this beautiful twiner after Henry John Mandeville, Esq. 1896T. W.
