‖ malapterurus Zool.|mælæptəˈrʊərəs| Pl. -uri |-ˈʊəraɪ|. [mod.L. (Lacépède 1803), badly f. Gr. µαλακός soft + πτερόν wing + οὐρά tail.] A genus of catfishes, certain species of which (esp. M. electricus of the Nile) have the property of giving an electric shock when handled.
