maghemite Min.|mægˈhiːmaɪt| [f. magnetite + hem-atite (var. hæmatite) + -ite1.] A modification of ferric oxide, Fe2O3, belonging to the spinel family, which is found as brown isometric crystals, is highly ferromagnetic, and is principally an alteration product of magnetite.
1927P. A. Wagner in Econ. Geol. XXII. 846 The interesting form of ferric oxide under discussion appears to be identical in atomic structure with magnetite, but has the chemical composition and the physical properties of hematite... It is desirable that it should have a distinctive designation... I would suggest maghemite. 1944Trans. Geol. Soc. S. Afr. XLVI. 30 Maghemite is the commonest and most widely distributed mineral in the Bushveld magnetic iron ores. 1962W. A. Deer et al. Rock-Forming Min. V. 73 Maghemite is metastable, and inverts to haematite (α-Fe2O3) on heating. |
