1890G. Gore Art Electrolytic Separation Metals ii. E. 79 In the cases of electrolysis of two liquids, separated by a porous partition, it is sometimes convenient to call the liquid containing the anode the anolyte, and that containing the cathode the catholyte. 1903W. McA. Johnson in Electrochem. Industry I. 454 Whenever a current passes from the anode to the anolyte, or from the catholyte to the cathode, then chemical change ensues. 1949F. A. Lowenheim in A. E. Knowlton Stand. Handbk. for Electr. Engin. (ed. 8) XX. 1926 The solution itself is the electrolyte; that surrounding the cathode is the catholyte, and that surrounding the anode the anolyte. |
