leightonite Min.|ˈleɪtənaɪt| [f. the name of Tomas Leighton (b. 1894), Chilean mineralogist + -ite1.] A hydrated sulphate of potassium, calcium, and copper found as transparent, pale blue to greenish blue, triclinic crystals at Chuquicamata, Chile.
1938C. Palache in Amer. Mineralogist XXIII. 34 Leightonite, as the new species will be named, is triclinic, as shown by optical examination. 1962Canad. Mineralogist VII. 276 It is interesting to note that leightonite has a chemical homologue—polyhalite, K2Ca2Mg(SO4)4.2H2O. 1963Acta Crystallogr. XVI. a10/1 Leightonite, K2Ca2Cu(SO4)4.2H2O, is triclinic, but it is pseudo-orthorhombic (face-centred) to the extent that no departure from 90° has been found in the angles of the unit cell as determined by the usual X-ray diffraction techniques. |
