lagena, n. Zool.|ləˈdʒiːnə| [a. L. lagēna flagon.] An extension of the saccule of the ear in some vertebrates, corresponding to the cochlear duct in mammals.
1878F. J. Bell tr. Gegenbaur's Elem. Compar. Anat. ix. 536 The portion of the labyrinth..known in Mammals as the cochlea..is..differentiated in the Reptilia and Aves, where the diverticulum which forms it..is a short conical piece... Its end is somewhat bent, and it forms the ‘lagena’. 1888Rolleston & Jackson Forms Animal Life (ed. 2) 420 The connection between the vestibule and saccule is closed in Batoidei, bony Ganoidei, and some Teleostei; and in the latter the cochlear outgrowth (= lagena) is large. 1962K. F. Lagler et al. Ichthyol. xi. 387 The sacculus and the lagena are more broadly joined to one another in the sharks..than in bony fishes. 1987Nature 14 May 153/2 The posterior eighth nerve branch sends one ramus to the posterior canal, one to the lagena, and several rami to the sacculus. Hence laˈgenar a., of or pertaining to the lagena.
1946Jrnl. Laryngol. & Otol. LXI. 207 Ross..studied the electrical reactions from the saccular and lagenar nerves in the sucker (Catastomus). 1962K. F. Lagler et al. Ichthyol. xi. 386 The lagenar otolith, and the underlying sensory tissue are, to a small degree, also involved in gravistatic or righting reflexes. 1987Nature 14 May 153/2 A separate lagenar recess including the lagenar epithelium was found in Latimeria. |
