laccase Biochem.|ˈlækeɪz, -s| [a. F. laccase (G. Bertrand 1894, in Compt. Rend. CXVIII. 1217), f. mod.L. lacc-a lac1: see -ase.] A copper-containing enzyme which effects the oxidation of hydroquinones to quinones, involved in the setting of lac.
1895Jrnl. R. Microsc. Soc. 649 Laccase resembles the diastatic ferments in its properties, except that, instead of hydrolysing, it incites direct oxidation. 1899J. R. Green Soluble Ferments xix. 296 The fungus which yields laccase most readily is Russula fœtens Pers., one of the Basidiomycetes, which is fairly common in woods during the summer. 1961Jrnl. Biochem. (Tokyo) L. 264/1 In the present investigation laccases of Japanese and Indo-Chinese lacquer trees have been purified..and their properties compared. 1966L. I. Ingraham in Florkin & Stotz Comprehensive Biochem. XIV. 440 Laccase catalyzes the aerobic oxidation of hydroquinones to p-quinone. It contains four copper atoms per mole which react with one mole of oxygen. 1971European Jrnl. Biochem. XXIII. 487/2 Whether the unequal load of laccase II with carbohydrate is associated with a fixation of this enzyme to the cell walls, or whether it plays any role in the postulated aggregation of the low molecular weight laccases II and III to the high molecular weight laccase I..must be elucidated by further experiments. |
