Williamsburg, n. Chiefly U.S.|ˈwɪljəmzbɜːg| The name of the Colonial capital of the state of Virginia, applied attrib. to a style of southern-colonial architecture and decoration considered characteristic of the town in Colonial times, and to domestic objects made in such a style. Also Comb., as Williamsburg-style a. The Colonial area of Williamsburg was restored as a ‘living museum’ between 1927 and 1935, with the support of the wealthy financier J. D. Rockefeller.
