wilkeite Min.|ˈwɪlkiːaɪt| [f. the name of R. M. Wilke, 20th-c. U.S. mineral collector + -ite1.] A silicate and sulphate mineral of the apatite group occurring as translucent pink or yellow hexagonal crystals (see quot. 1982).
1914Eakle & Rogers in Amer. Jrnl. Sci. CLXXXVII. 263 The writers take pleasure in naming it wilkeite in honor of R. M. Wilke, who as a mineral collector and dealer has done much to advance the science of mineralogy. 1937Amer. Mineralogist XXII. 977 It has become necessary to investigate the substitutions of the sort found in wilkeite. 1975Nature 27 Feb. 722/1 Among the minerals described to have any significant degree of P(V)–Si(IV) partial substitution are viseite, nagatelite and wilkeite, an apatite with partial SiO4 + SO4 substitution for PO4. 1982Amer. Mineralogist LXVII. 90 Wilkeite is not a valid mineral species, since it is only one of many solid solutions involving the six end-members fluorapatite, hydroxyapatite, chlorapatite, fluorellestadite, hydroxyellestadite, and chlorellestadite. |
