1832G. Bennett in London Med. Gaz. 7 Jan. 506/2 A tree of the Natural Family Coniferæ, collected without..flower or fruit: it is named Káwaka by the natives of New Zealand, attaining the height of from 60 to 70 feet... The natives informed me that it derived the name Káwaka from the branches growing out regularly on each side of the tree. 1855R. Taylor Te Ika a Maui 440 Kawaka, koaka (dacrydium plumosum). This tree grows in large quantities on the central plains; the wood is of a very dark red grain, and is said to be as durable as the totara. 1906T. F. Cheeseman Man. N.Z. Flora 647 Kawaka; New Zealand Arbor-vitæ. Wood dark-red, beautifully grained, said to be durable, but on account of its scarcity little used. 1966Encycl. N.Z. II. 208/2 Kawaka occurs in lowland forest from Northland to the centre of the North Island and again in the north-west tip of the South Island. |
