A name used for various plants originally native to Japan, esp. formerly the camellia (C. japonica); now usually designating a spring-flowering, deciduous shrub of the genus Chænomeles, esp. C. japonica, the Japanese quince, or its fruit.

1874Lindley & Moore Treas. Bot. II. Suppl. 1308/1 Japonica. A market name for the fruits of Zizyphus sinensis, which are occasionally sold in Covent Garden as dessert fruits. 1887R. Bentley Man. Bot. (ed. 5) ii. 517 Another Japanese species, Z[izyphus] sinensis, yields the fruits known as Japonicas.
Hence jaˈponicadom U.S. (see quot. 1860). Obs.
