irene Chem.|ˈaɪəriːn| [ad. G. iren (Tiemann & Krüger 1893, in Ber. d. Deut. Chem. Ges. XXVI. 2682), f. G. ir-on irone + -en -ene.] A colourless, liquid, bicyclic hydrocarbon, C14H20, obtained by the dehydration of irone.
1894Jrnl. Chem. Soc. LXVI. i. 81 When treated with hydriodic acid and phosphorus, irone loses a molecule of water, and forms irene, C13H18, which is a colourless oil boiling at 113–115° (9 mm.). 1938Jrnl. Amer. Chem.
