1. The state or quality of being visual or visible to the mind; mental visibility.
1840Carlyle Heroes iii. (1904) 92 Every compartment of it is worked-out, with intense earnestness, into truth, into clear visuality. 1858― Fredk. Gt. x. viii. II. 685 The image he has of his Burial, we perceive, is of perfect visuality, equal to what a Defoe could do in imagining.
2. With a and pl. A mental picture or vision.
1841Carlyle Misc. Ess. (1857) IV. 242 We must..catch a few more visualities. 1845― Cromwell I. 154 We have a pleasant visuality of an old summer afternoon ‘in the Queen's Court’ two hundred years ago. 1912H. Bradley Let. in Corr. Bridges & Bradley (1940) 96, I do not think I can even say or hear ‘bread and butter’, or ‘dog and cat’, without an accompanying under⁓consciousness of the way in which these words are commonly spelt. (It may be deplorable that any human soul should have got into this degraded state of subjection to black and white visualities.)
