regatta|rɪˈgætə| Also 7 regatto, 7–8 regate, 8 regata. [It. (Venetian) regatta (and regata) ‘a strife or contention or struggling for the maistrie’ (Florio): hence also F. régate.] 1. The name given at Venice to certain boat-races held on the Grand Canal.
