[prob.:—OE. ᵹemǽd for ᵹemǽded pa. pple. of ᵹemǽdan to madden, Goth. *gamaidjan f. gamaid-s bruised, crazed (ON. meiddr from meiða to hurt, maim), OHG. gameit, OS. gamêd foolish, of which the OE. cogn. ᵹemád adj. was apparently replaced by this pple. ᵹemǽd.
