[prob.:—OE. ᵹemǽd for ᵹemǽded pa. pple. of ᵹemǽdan to madden, Goth. *gamaidjan f. gamaid-s bruised, crazed (ON. meiddr from meiða to hurt, maim), OHG. gameit, OS. gamêd foolish, of which the OE. cogn. ᵹemád adj. was apparently replaced by this pple. ᵹemǽd. The vowel was shortened as in clad, OE. ᵹeclád for ᵹecláðod. See also mad.]
