†1. Chem. (Formerly at idio-.) An idiotypic substance. Obs.
1861F. Guthrie in Q. Jrnl. Chem. Soc. XIII. 35 The terms isotype and idiotype, isotypic and idiotypic may be advantageously adopted to denote bodies which belong to similar types, or to the same one, and the relations which such bodies bear to one another... A body is idiotypic with all its replacement derivatives; the latter are, of course, idiotypic with one another; the whole are idiotypes. 1865Watts Dict. Chem. III. 242 Idiotype, a term applied by Guthrie..to bodies derived by replacement from the same substance, including the typical substance itself.
2. Genetics. [ad. G. Idiotypus (1917 in H. W. Siemens Biol. Grundlagen der Rassenhygiene 31).] The set of all hereditary determinants of an individual, including both chromosomal and extrachromosomal components; also, formerly, = genotype n.2
