idiotope, n. Immunol.|ˈɪdɪəʊtəʊp| [f. idio- + Gr. τόπ-ος place, after epitope n.] Any site on the surface of an antibody molecule having antibody-binding characteristics analogous to those of an epitope, esp. considered as one of the set of such sites that characterizes the antibody (see *idiotype n. 2).
1960N. K. Jerne in Ann. Rev. Microbiol. XIV. 342 Epitopes that are carried by components of one individual animal are idiotopes. The idiotypes to which they belong constitute the idiom of the animal. 1973― in Sci. Amer. July 59/1 When antibodies produced by animal A are injected into animal B, animal B will produce antibodies against the idiotypic epitopes (‘idiotopes’) of the injected antibody molecules. 1983Jrnl. Exper. Med. CLVII. 799 Both the AI and MB idiotopes are represented in a single germ line gene that encodes Id. 1989Brit. Jrnl. Haematol. LXXII. 155/1 The level of expression of the idiotopes recognized by antibodies 44.2A1 and 2H3.D6 in CLL is sufficient to make clinical trials with pre-formed antibodies against shared idiotopes a practical proposition. |
