hygrometer|haɪˈgrɒmɪtə(r)| [mod. f. Gr. ὑγρο- hygro- + -meter; prob. ad. F. hygromètre (1666 in Hatz.-Darm.).] An instrument for measuring the humidity of the air or a gas, or the ratio of the amount of moisture actually present in it to that required for saturation. (Formerly often applied to a contrivance for simply indicating the comparative humidity, to which the name hygroscope is more properly given.)
