[a. G. horst heap, mass, cluster, sandbank, etc.; introduced in its geol. sense by E. Suess (Antlitz d. Erde (1883) I. i. iii. 167).]
A block of the earth's surface which has been raised relative to the surrounding land and is bounded by faults on some or all sides.

XLIX. 77 We have, therefore, sunken massifs both west and east of the Dürrenstein; that mountain itself remains at a higher level between the two, and may be called a ‘Horst’ in the sense originally applied by Suess.1904H.
