hoplite|ˈhɒplaɪt| [ad. Gr. ὁπλῑ́της, f. ὅπλον weapon, piece of armour, heavy shield, pl. ὅπλα arms: see -ite.] A heavy-armed foot-soldier of ancient Greece.
