▪ I. ‖ hong|hɒŋ| Also 8 haung. [ad. Chinese hang row, rank.] In China, a series of rooms or buildings used as a warehouse, factory, etc.; spec. (a) one of the foreign factories formerly maintained at Canton; (b) the corporation of Chinese merchants at Canton who (before the treaty of Nanking in 1842) had the monopoly of trade with Europeans; (c) a foreign trading establishment in China or Japan.
