Biol.|hɒməʊˈgɒnɪk| [f. homo- + Gr. -γονος generating, γόνος offspring + -ic.] Applied to a life cycle of certain nematodes in which the offspring of a parasitic generation themselves develop into parasites, without the intervention of a free-living generation; also applied to organisms reproducing by such a cycle. Opp. heterogonic a. 2.
1926[see heterogonic a. 2]. 1939Amer. Jrnl. Hygiene XXX. d. 15 In those Strongyloides infections where both modes of larval development are commonly encountered, there is little constancy in the daily yields of heterogonic, i.e., indirect or free-living adult, in contrast to homogonic, or direct, progeny. 1951L. H. Hyman Invertebrates III. xiii. 307 It is probable that any species of Rhabdias may employ either the homogonic or heterogonic type of life cycle. 1968N. D. Levine Nematode Parasites ii. 75/1 Absence of food, too, led to homogonic development. Hence homoˈgonically adv., by means of a homogonic life cycle.
1938Amer. Jrnl. Hygiene XXVIII. 224 The production of these two types of progeny was related to the age of the single, homogonically derived parasite. 1968N. D. Levine Nematode Parasites ii. 75/1 In a loam soil..40% of the larvae developed into females, 40% into males and 20% homogonically into infective larvae. |
