hologamy Biol.|həʊˈlɒgəmɪ| [ad. F. hologamie (P. A. Dangeard 1900, in Botaniste VII. v. 265), f. holo- + -gamy.] a. A mode of reproduction found in certain protozoa and algæ, in which copulation consists in the fusion of whole organisms morphologically similar to the vegetative form.
1925E. B. Wilson Cell (ed. 3) vii. 582 Hologamy or Macrogamy... This condition is seen in various flagellates, rhizopods, ciliates, diatoms, desmids and the Conjugatæ generally. 1940L. H. Hyman Invertebrates I. iii. 99 Sexual processes are absent except in Scytomonas where hologamy has been observed. 1965V. A. Dogiel Gen. Protozool. (ed. 2) vii. 308 Hologamy is characterized by an almost complete absence of the preparatory stage of gametocytes. b. A mode of reproduction found in certain fungi, in which the entire thallus becomes a gametangium and fusion of two mature individuals occurs.
1928C. W. Dodge tr. Gäumann's Compar. Morphol. Fungi iv. 12 This special case of gametangial copulation..is called hologamy. 1965J. Wilkinson tr. Langeron's Outl. Mycol. (ed. 2) ix. 378 Hologamy is gametangial copulation of holocarps. Hence ˈhologamete, a gamete that is morphologically similar to the vegetative cell and is not specially formed by fission; holoˈgamic, hoˈlogamous adjs.
1925E. B. Wilson Cell (ed. 3) vii. 583 Even when hologamous gametes are alike or closely similar in appearance they often display definite physiological differences that become evident at the time of conjugation. Ibid. 589 Gametes of the hologamic type. 1926G. N. Calkins Biol. Protozoa x. 498 In the case of Scytomonas (Copromonas) subtilis..the evidence appears to be fairly convincing that copulation of hologametes actually does occur. 1932Borradaile & Potts Invertebrata ii. 27 Volvox..and related forms have an anisogamy in which the female gamete is a hologamete. 1965V. A. Dogiel Gen. Protozool. (ed. 2) vii. 309 Hologamous copulation takes place also in some Phytomonadina belonging to the genus Chlamydomonas. |
