allochronic, a. Biol.|ælæʊˈkrɒnɪk| [f. allo- + synchronic a.] Of species, populations, etc.: existing at different points in (geological) time; breeding or flourishing at different seasons. Of speciation: occurring through the development of different breeding seasons in populations which are not geographically separated.
1953E. Mayr et al. Methods & Princ. Systematic Zool. i. 37 It has therefore been proposed to use two sets of terminology, one for the synchronous allopatric subspecies of the neontologist and one for allochronic subspecies. 1966McGraw-Hill Encycl. Sci. & Technol. XII. 572/2 Species which occur together in time, more particularly at the same geological level, are designated as synchronic; those which are separated in time are allochronic. 1977Science 5 Aug. 592/3 Proposed cases of sympatric speciation through seasonal isolation (that is, allochronic speciation) are not as well supported. 1983Thornhill & Alcock Evolution Insect Mating Syst. xiii. 409 There are few well-documented cases of nearly identical songs..among allopatric or allochronic (seasonally segregated) species of acoustical insects. Hence aˈllochrony n., seasonal segregation.
1978Environmental Entomol. VII. 708 Podosesia syringae (Harris) and P. aureocincta Purrington and Nielsen are sympatric sibling clearwing moths reproductively isolated by adult allochrony. 1988Nature 3 Nov. 66/1 This allochrony is potentially important in serving to isolate sympatric populations on the two host plants. 1992Environmental Biol. Fishes XXXIII. 173/1 V. vimba also spawns somewhat earlier in the season than B. bjoerkna and so spawning allochrony further safeguards their reproductive isolation. |
