redingtonite Min.|ˈrɛdɪŋtənaɪt| [f. the name of the Redington mine, Knoxville, Napa Co., Calif. + -ite1.] A hydrous sulphate of iron, magnesium, chromium, and aluminium occurring as fibrous masses of a white, yellowish, or purple colour.
1888G. F. Becker in Monogr. U.S. Geol. Survey No. 13. 279 A hydrous chromium sulphate occurs in fissures in silicified serpentine... It seems appropriate to give the name redingtonite to this hitherto unknown mineral. 1965G. J. Williams Econ. Geol. N.Z. x. 149/1 He found deep lilac or purple earthy redingtonite associated with the folia of the fuchsite. |
