hambergite Min.|ˈhæmbəgaɪt| [ad. G. hambergit (W. C. Brögger 1890, in Zeitschr. f. Kryst. und Min. XVI (Specieller Th.). 65), f. the name of A. Hamberg (1863–1933), Sw. mineralogist, who discovered it: see -ite1.] A basic borate of beryllium, Be2(OH)BO3, occurring in colourless orthorhombic crystals that have strong double refraction.
1890Jrnl. Chem. Soc. LVIII. ii. 1078 Hambergite, discovered by A. Hamberg in 1889, and named after him by the author, crystallises in the rhombic system. 1962R. Webster Gems I. xvi. 265 Hambergite..was originally found in southern Norway in material of non-gem quality, but a discovery has now been made of large colourless crystals in central Madagascar. |
