1899Brit. Chem. Abstr. LXXVI. i. 821 (heading) Gossypol, a Constituent of Cotton-seeds... When the phenolic constituents of cotton-seed oil are purified..a crystalline product is obtained... This substance, to which the name of gossypol is given, has a composition corresponding..with that required for the formula C13H14O4. 1937Jrnl. Amer. Chem. Soc. LIX. 1725/1 A red isomeric form of gossypol has been isolated recently by Podolskaja. This material melts at 184–185° and gives the reactions of ordinary yellow gossypol... Merely grinding the red form in a mortar converts it to the yellow. 1955Sci. News Let. 24 Sept. 196/2 The poison glands, scattered throughout the cotton plant, especially in the seeds, produce a toxic pigment called gossypol. Because of the presence of gossypol, feeding of cottonseed meal was long restricted to cattle and sheep, unaffected by the poison. 1961L. F. & M. Fieser Adv. Org. Chem. xxii. 767 Gossypol..was shown by R. Adams (1938) to be a symmetrically substituted 2,2′-di-(1-naphthol) derivative. |
