turbopause Meteorol.|ˈtɜːbəʊpɔːz| [f. turbulence + -o + pause n.] The outer limit of a turbosphere, where the distribution of constituents is due equally to diffusion and turbulent mixing.
1951S. Chapman in Jrnl. Atmospheric & Terrestrial Physics I. 201 The diffusive tendency becomes increasingly effective at greater heights, and it may be (but it is not certain) that at some level diffusion becomes dominant over the turbulent mixing. The name turbopause is suggested for this level. 1967R. W. Fairbridge Encycl. Atmospheric Sci. & Astrogeol. 5/1 Above the turbopause, which [on earth] lies between 100 and 130 km, diffusion is more important than turbulent mixing in distributing the constituents. 1979Nature 17 May 221/1 The δ-bands, present in the Earth's twilight and night time airglow spectra,..indicate a significant population of atomic nitrogen at or below the Venus turbopause. |
