agma Phonol. (ˈægmə, ‖ ˈæŋmə) [a. late Gr., f. Gr. ἄγµα fragment.] A name for the sound [ŋ], orig. as it occurred in Ancient Greek when the letter γ preceded another γ, κ, χ, or a nasal consonant; a symbol standing for this sound in phonetic transcription.
1890W. J. Purton tr. F. W. Blass's Pronunc. Anc. Greek xxii. 88 Some would assume the guttural nasal, written γ, before µ and ν, on account of the traditional name agma; for in this name, a transposition of γάµµα, the sound itself ought according to them to occur. For this very reason however others emend ἄγγµα. 1957[see murmur vowel s.v. murmur n. 5]. 1967Dillon & Chadwick Celtic Realms ix. 207 The earliest Irish documents we have are inscriptions in a curious alphabet called Ogam... [Note] O'Rahilly appears to think that Ogam was brought into Ireland from Gaul. Richardson stresses the importance of the special sign for ng (agma). 1980–81Verbatim Winter 14/2 Some, who do not believe that dictionary users will make the effort to interpret unfamiliar symbols like the long s (ʃ), IPA for the sh in shoot and other spelled forms,..the agma (ŋ), for the ng in thing, and others, continue to use Moo Goo Gai Pan transcription. |
