galactan Chem.|gəˈlæktæn| [a. G. galactan (C. Scheibler 1882, in Neue Zeitschr. f. Rübenzucker-Industrie VIII. 277/1), adapted from galactin (f. Gr. γαλακτ-, γάλα milk) to conform with G. dextran dextran.] Any of a group of polysaccharides that yield galactose on hydrolysis and occur in many plants, esp. algæ, lichens, mosses, and conifers, and a few animals.
