A. n. A person from beyond the river Jordan (see Jordan2); also transf.; spec. (now Hist.) a native or inhabitant of Transjordan (Transjordania), a territory east of the Jordan, now part of the Hashemite kingdom of the Jordan.
B. adj. Of or pertaining to the land beyond the Jordan; spec. (now Hist.) of or pertaining to Transjordan. Cf. trans-Jordan, -ic s.v. trans- 7.
The emirate of Transjordan(ia) was established under British mandate in 1921. The name was retained for the short-lived kingdom (1946–9), now Eastern Jordan.
