1. In internal combustion engines, that diminishing combustion which follows the fuller force of the first ignition.

XXII. 525/1 The process of combustion..is essentially gradual; when ignition takes place it begins rapidly, but it continues to go on at a diminishing rate throughout the stroke. That part which takes place after the maximum pressure is passed is the phenomenon of after-burning.1931A. W. The ‘after-burning’ consisted simply of fuel jets disposed annularly around the tail pipe or nozzle much in the same way as planned for the Athodyd or ram-jet.1949Flight 8 Sept. 285/1 Exhaust reheat, or ‘afterburning’, is the name given to the process of burning fuel in the exhaust pipe of a jet-propulsion unit.
