filicic, a. Chem.|fɪˈlɪsɪk| Also filixic. [ad. G. filixsäure filicic acid (E. Luck 1851, in Jahrb. f. prakt. Pharm. XXII. 130), f. L. filic-, filix fern + -ic.] filicic acid, a mixture of phloroglucinol derivatives obtained from the rhizome of various ferns (chiefly the common male fern, Dryopteris filix-mas), and one of the anthelmintic agents in the drug Male Fern (filix mas) (the name was orig. given to the crude extract of the fern, now called filicin). Similarly ˈfilicin [a. G. filicin (E. Poulsson 1891, in Arch. f. exper. Path. & Pharm. XXIX. 9)], (a) the crude extract of anthelmintic principles obtained from male fern; (b) the therapeutically inactive lactone of filicic acid; also loosely applied to the acid itself.

Chem. Soc. LXII. i. 380 The poisonous properties of fern extract are due to an amorphous substance which is the true filicic acid. The acid is readily converted into its lactone, by simply boiling its ethereal solution. The lactone is named filicin. 1941Thorpe's Dict. Appl. Chem.
