togidashi|tɒgɪˈdæʃɪ| Also togi-dashi. [a. Jap., f. togu to whet, grind + dasu to produce, let appear.] A kind of Japanese lacquering in which several coats of lacquer, applied over gold or silver designs, are rubbed and ground down to let the underlying picture appear as if floating below the lacquer surface.
