[f. the common phr. fana ga lo = ‘like this’ in the lingua franca of southern African mines (see below), f. Zulu fana be like + ka poss. prefix Class 1a + lo demonstr. Classes 1 and 3.]
A lingua franca of southern Africa, made up of elements of Zulu/Xhosa, English, and Afrikaans. Formerly called Kitchen Kaffir or Mine Kaffir.
The word kaffir being regarded as derogatory by Africans, the new name Fanagalo came to be adopted by mining authorities and other employers.
