1889W. P. Sladen in Rep. Sci. Results Voy. H.M.S. Challenger: Zool. XXX. p. xxvi, I consider that the Phanerozonate group is older than the Cryptozonate. 1906E. W. MacBride in Cambr. Nat. Hist. I. xvi. 454 In a very large number of Asteroidea the supero- and infero⁓marginal ossicles are represented by squarish plates even when the rest of the skeleton is reticulate; this is the so-called ‘phanerozonate’ structure. 1923Nature 13 Jan. 47/1 What these specialists are impressed by is the ‘phanerozonate’ character of the Astropectinidae, that is, the edging of the arms with a series of broad plates termed the ‘marginals’. 1966J. W. Durham et al. in R. C. Moore Treat. Invertebr. Paleont. U. I. u36/2 Some Cryptozonia have a phanerozonate stage in ontogeny. |
