According to W. W. Tooker in Amer. Anthropologist Jan. 1899 (N.S.) I. 162–170, meaning ‘at or near the opening out or widening’, f. poquo to break, open out, widen + (e)s dimin. + -in(g) locative suffix. ‘The application of the term therefore..was to indicate or describe a locality where water ‘backed up’ in spring freshets, or in rainy seasons, and which by reason of [this] became more or less marshy or boggy.’ As the name of a river in Virginia, the word is found as early as 1635.]
