Gr. ἐπίπεδ-ος (f. ἐπί upon + πέδον the ground), in Geom. = plane, superficial + -µετρία measurement.] Explained in Dicts. as ‘The measurement of figures that stand on the same base’. Etymologically the word can only mean ‘measurement of plane surfaces’, though some Fr. dicts. explain épipédométrie as ‘measurement of solids’.
