The study of the Jewish Law. Also freq. used attrib. and absol. to designate a school run by the community for the instruction of children in the Jewish religion (see also quot. 1962). Cf. chedar.

In America, Talmud Torah generally refers to a school which meets in the afternoon after the secular school session is over. Its curriculum includes the study of the Bible, Hebrew, Jewish history, customs and ceremonies, and other phases of elementary Jewish knowledge. 1964W.
