adenyl Chem.|ˈædɪnɪl| [f. adenine + -yl.] A radical contained in adenine. Hence adeˈnylic a., esp. adenylic acid, a nucleotide found in red blood corpuscles, muscle, etc., consisting of adenine, ribose, and phosphoric acid.
1894Gould Illustr. Dict. Med., Adenyl. 1894Jrnl. Chem. Soc. LXVI. i. 156 The nuclëic acid prepared from the thyroid gland of calves yields adenine on boiling with water, and is therefore termed adenylic acid. 1936Ann. Reg. 1935 ii. 54 Muscle study showed that the chemical changes accompanying contraction are a complicated chain of linked reactions involving creatine, adenylic, and phosphoric acid, and carbohydrates and the complexity grows. 1946Nature 23 Nov. 746/2 Here also the hydrogenation would be accompanied by a hydrolysis of the coenzyme molecule followed by a transfer of the phosphate of the adenylic acid to other phosphate acceptors.

1962E. W. Sutherland et al. in Jrnl. Biol. Chem. CCXXXVII. 1220/1 For simplicity, the term *adenyl cyclase or cyclase will be used to describe the enzyme system until other evidence..is available. 1968Science 2 Feb. 545/1 The purpose of this report is..to show that the renal adenyl cyclase sensitive to parathyroid hormone is anatomically distinct from that sensitive to vasopressin. 1988Nature 3 Nov. 17/2 These results suggest slow steps in the coupling of hormone receptors to the enzymes responsible for generation of the second messenger, phospholipase C or adenylcyclase. |
