1. trans. To make a donation or gift of; hence, vulgarly (in U.S.), to give, bestow, grant.

Name given to members or associates of certain religious orders (see quots.).
1804L. de Boisgelin Anc. & Mod. Malta I. ii. iii. 239 Those who were desirous of being received into the confraternity, and to become brothers de stage or donats in the order, presented themselves before the brother who was to receive them, fell on their knees, and placing their hands on the missal which the brother held open, pronounced the following words.1858G. Bowyer Ritual of Profession of Knights & Religious Ladies p. xiii, A Donat, or Confrère, is a member of the Order, and participates in the divine offices, benefits, prayers, Masses, and pious works of the Order.
