1. A salt formed by the combination of acetic acid with an alkaline, earthy, or metallic base; as acetate of lead, called also sugar of lead.

2. A synthetic material in the manufacture of which acetic acid is used, esp. attrib., as acetate rayon, rayon made from cellulose acetate (see cellulose B. c), acetate silk, etc.

3. Orig., a disc made of glass coated with cellulose acetate, used for direct recording by a cutting stylus; hence, any direct-cut disc (of whatever material), as opposed to a pressing.
