acetanilide Chem.|ˌæsɪˈtænɪlaɪd| [f. acetyl) + anilide.] A compound of aniline in union with the radical acetyl, forming an acetamide with the radical phenyl. C6H5.NH.C2H3O. Less correctly acetaniline. Used esp. as an analgesic and antipyretic.

II. 453 Acetanilide, or Phenylacetamide, produced by heating aniline and glacial acetic acid for several hours..forms colourless, shining, laminar crystals, melting at 112°–113°. 1882Athenæum 2859, 211 Acetaniline acted on by chloride of lime at a temperature of 270 Cent. produces a beautiful yellow to which the name of flavaniline is given. 1897Trans. IX. 41, I have collected several cases of acetanilide poisoning in children where the drug was used externally as an antiseptic. 1956Lancet 24 Mar. 339/1 Acetanilide is a dangerous drug because the body de-acetylates part of it into aniline. |
